All of my life I was told to be a good example, be polite, be a model for grace... but I was never very good at that, and there were so many other more interesting things to do anyway. This war is a horrible thing, of course, but now I can be so much more than just a vicar's daughter.

Samantha Stewart, better known as Sam, is the daughter of a vicar - in fact, her family boasts quite a few vicars, and as such, she was expected to live a quiet life. Sam had other ideas, however. When the Second World War erupted, Sam joined the Mechanized Transport Corps and considered the whole thing a grand adventure, away from the restrictions of her childhood. She has been seconded to the police force, to serve as Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle's driver, in Hastings.

Sam is a young woman (twenty-one when she first comes into the bar), usually dressed in military uniform (particularly of the Mechanized Transport Corps). Despite the fact her country is in danger of being invaded any day now, she tends to be a cheerful gal - even more cheerful if you happen to feel inclined to share a meal with her. Rationing is a horrible thing for an active young woman.
